The Pig Sighting

Before the Pig

The Pig descends onto us...

Curious little guy..
We were not happy.

We soon found out that the pig belonged to the owners of the house we were staying in. When she returned home that evening she said "Did my pig give you any trouble?" Uh, yeah. Just a little bit. Turns out the pig has been causing trouble for some time, and while the owners originally took in the pig to save him from the slaughter house, they were arranging the very next day to have him taken away because he was too naughty.

The next morning a truck came and left with the pig in the trailer...I felt a little bad, but I was also happy he couldn't come back and try to drink our wine.

Okato Beach House

The Hairiest Pig...

It had been a long stretch of work, and we decided to spend a nice, relaxing weekend on the beach south of New Plymouth. Found a little beach house to rent online, unfortunately finding it in real life was much harder. Apparently, instead of a road sign, the name of the road is painted on a rock, that you can only see from one direction...yep, not the direction we were coming from. So we drove past it several times, all the while the gas tank getting nervously close to empty (oops..forgot to fill up before we left). After asking for directions twice, we finally found the road, and drove down a very long, dirt road which basically led right to the ocean. We were happy to find a peaceful, modern little studio apartment, connected to the owner's house. With the sound of the surf crashing in, and the sun setting over the ocean, we couldn't help but relax. We gathered together our usual accoutrements for such occasions (wine, cheese, bread...this is common knowledge by now) and sat out on our porch watching the waves.

In distance we saw a large pig ambling around, slowly making his way toward us. Suddenly we realized he was not meandering, he was running...directly toward us. Clearly this pig wanted something, probably our food. We scrambled to collect our valuable food, and closed ourselves inside our sliding door. The pig pressed it's huge nose against the door, smearing it on the clean glass...We felt trapped inside the beautiful beachhouse.

"Is this seriously happening?" my husband mournfully asked.

Earthquake!!

Yesterday as we were sitting at our table having breakfast, the dishes started to rattle, and the table started to move. At first I thought it was just a big truck driving by, but then I remembered that we live on a dead end and there are no roads by our house...we realized all at once that this was an EARTHQUAKE! We excitedly got up and ran outside (not what you are supposed to do apparently) and could feel the ground swaying. It was quite surreal. I found out later at work that it was a 5.1 on the richter scale, and the epicenter was about 50 miles away. Everyone here was very blase about the whole thing, as they are used to it, and it wasn't a very big one anyways. They told me that you are supposed to get under a table during an earthquake....

I have lost my earthquake virginity...

Napier, the Art Deco City

The sun is setting on our Gannet adventure, and low tide uncovers an interesting landscape...
The gannets are claiming all the rocks for their nests...
Riding on the beach at sunset. Can't beat this.
